Traditionally, buying a ticket would involve going to a local travel agents, getting in line for a while and then sitting and talking with a salesperson that would usually be intent on selling you the most expensive ticket in order to increase their commission. Of course, unless you fail to make it clear to them that you are only interested in obtaining the best deals, and can actually persuade them to seek out a cheap flight for you, then in all likelihood you will end up getting a bad deal.

The Internet has brought about a change in the way people make their travel arrangements. Online agents now offer the convenience for you to check availability and pricing of flights to London in the more relaxed and unhurried comfort of your own home. What's more, many of the online flight sellers are keen to offer you a good deal from the start, for they know that they can't suddenly change tact when you get up and start heading for the door. As an online visitor, the reality for them is that you'll probably be gone for good once you leave their website and there is no way that they will get you back. Therefore, it's clearly within their interests to try to find you the best deals in order to turn you into a satisfied customer before you click off of their site and on to one of their competitors.

How to Save Money on Flights to London

Regardless of whether you intend to purchase your ticket through an online ticket vendor or via your local travel agent it will pay to read the following tips and advice so that you can stay one step ahead of the game and hopefully save some money on your flight.

Saver Tip #1 - If you can be flexible with your travel arrangements and aren't too fussy about the departure and/or arrival times of your flight to London you may be able to pick up a lower priced ticket. For example, some people might not want to book a flight that departs at 6 a.m. as they don't like to get up early or they may find it difficult to get to the airport during the middle of the night in time for a 4.a.m check-in. For others, the arrival time in London might cause some problems as they may not want to arrive late at night, especially if they have nobody meeting them or they haven't made arrangements for accommodation. Make it known to your travel agent if these, or similar, reasons are unlikely to create any problems for you. You might just get lucky and find a cheaper deal.

Saver Tip #2 - Sometimes bargain flights to London can be had if you are prepared to wait until 24 hours before your intended flight before booking your ticket. Often, a flight may not have received enough bookings to fill the aircraft and in such a situation the airline will want to fill the remaining seats in the shortest amount of time in order to minimize their losses. To achieve this they will often sell tickets very cheaply, however, if it is absolutely essential that you travel on a certain date, we do not recommend this as the best way of obtaining a cheap ticket to London, especially if you are starting out from an airport on a busy route, such as New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo where departing flights to London are often full to capacity.

Saver Tip #3 - Airlines will sometimes offer seats at low cost even when the tickets are bought well in advance of the travel date. They normally do this when they know that it will be difficult for them to fill seats on specific dates. The drawback with these 'specials' is that usually some restrictions will apply. The tickets might be non-refundable or changes not possible after they have been paid for. Others may incur penalties for refunds or changes. If you are unlikely to change your flight dates after purchase this could be the ideal way to get low cost flights to London.

Saver Tip #4 - On some routes where it is difficult for the air carrier to fill seats for a flight from just one starting point they will sometimes pick up passengers from other cities en route. Some people don't like the inconvenience of additional stops and they instead opt for direct flights, which usually cost more. If you don't mind taking a bit longer to get to your destination, you may be able to get a flight at substantially lower cost than the direct equivalent.

Saver Tip #5 - London has five major airports, as listed below

  • Heathrow (LHR) - Located Approx 15 miles / 24 Km West of London

  • Gatwick (LGW) - Located 28 Miles / 45 Km South of London

  • Luton (LTN) - Located 32 Miles / 49 Km North of London

  • Stansted (STN) - Located About 31 Miles / 49 Km North East of London

  • London City (LCY) - Located 6 Miles / 10 Km East of the City of London

Another way that you may be able to save money is to opt for a flight to either Luton, Stansted or London City airport. Whether or not these options are available to you will depend on where you are flying from, but are well worth inquiring about as they are sometimes a less favored, and often unknown, option for travelers to London. The great thing about traveling into these alternate airports is that they are usually not as busy as Heathrow and Gatwick and they are all served by various bus, train and taxi services so that you can continue with your journey into Central London with ease. In some cases, flying to an alternate airport may prove to be more convenient, especially if you are going to be staying in North or East London.

So there you have it! We hope that our tips help you to obtain your air ticket for a bargain price and that you enjoy your stay in London.  Have a great flight!
