Hyde Park

Hyde Park, at Speakers Corner, is very well known for the speaking of political opinions and such, but there is something for everyone at this vast expanse of parkland. The park is notable as it dates back to 1536, when the land was purchased by Henry VIII from the monks at Westminster Abbey. Henry VIII used the land mostly for deer hunting, but today it is more likely to be used for leisurely horseback riding.

Those that go for rides on horses in Hyde Park today will be taken away by the very serene trails. While the trails are numerous, they are only for those that own their own horses. However, visitors can observe the Royal Horse Artillery riding on horseback during the morning hours. Even if you don’t have your own horse, you’ll enjoy the beauty of others riding on theirs.

Hyde Park in the Past

Hyde Park was first made available to the public in the early 17th century by none other than King James I. The park is split by the Serpentine lake. The lake is still a very popular destination as visitors can take boat rides or simply relax in scenic surroundings at the lakeside. The Serpentine was the brain child of King George the II, who was an avid gardener and thought the lake would compliment his gardens.

Hyde Park Today

Today, Hyde Park is considered to be one of the oldest parks in London and is on an expanse of 350 acres. The park contains beautiful gardens, wooded areas, boats that can be rented, clearings for concerts and entertainment, and more. After a peaceful walk through the gardens or a hike through the woods you can stop to eat at a local pub or restaurant. If you are daring, you can also take a walk into the pet cemetery!

In the northeast corner of the park, visitors will see the famous Marble Arch. Originally, the arch was built as an entrance or gateway to Buckingham Palace, but it was moved to the park in 1851. The arch is a favorite of most visitors and a true London destination. There are other monuments in the park that are interesting, as well. One of the most visited is a monument to the Princess of Wales, Princess Diana. This monument is a gorgeous fountain that is made of granite, with three bridges that cross through the middle of the fountain.

If sports are your thing, Hyde Park boasts six tennis courts, soccer games, and a flat bowling green. The kids will also find that Hyde Park is a great place to be as it is fitted with a fantastic playground. The park also has a café and a  pavilion that is worth a look. 

Hyde Park is great entertainment as there is everything you could ever imagine in and around the park. It can be reached via the Tube, as it is between Bayswater Road to the North, Knightsbridge to the south, Park Lane to the east and Kensington Gardens to the west. When coming to the park from the Tube, you’ll want to exit at the Hyde Park Corner station. Visiting Hyde Park is certainly worth a day of your time.
